You are a middle-aged foreign couple living in the United States. You came here to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, one year ago to escape from political problems in your country. You (the husband) have a permanent visa to stay in the United States, but you (the wife) only have a temporary visa, which expired last month. You (the wife) have applied for a permanent visa, but you have not received it yet. You (the wife) are now in the United States illegally.
During the last year, both of you have worked in part-time jobs. You got these jobs because of the agency that was sponsoring you (the agency stopped sponsoring you two months ago). At first, life was exciting; but now you are beginning to have many problems. How can you solve them?

Problem 1: Your (the wife’s) visa
You are now in the United States illegally, because your visa has expired. The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) says it will take at least five months to process your application for a new visa. You are very afraid that INS will send you back to your country. What can you do?
